More New Art - Structures #33 and #34

These two pieces were started June of 2003 in a Master Class with Sue Benner at Quilt Surface Design Symposium. We didn’t work on specific exercises, instead each student worked on their own ideas with very little or no direction from Sue. It was an excellent class and Sue lead us in some thought provoking discussions about being an artist and interesting critique sessions.

Both of these pieces were inspired by my early morning runs in the high plains of Colorado. The blues of the mountains and sky, the green trees, the grays and browns of the earth. The yellow and pinks of the morning sunset. These pieces also commemorate the half marathon (13.1 miles) I ran later that summer.

This first piece I completed during the workshop but I wasn’t happy with it. So today I took the piece apart and reassembled it. I much happier with this new configuration.

I made very little progress on this second quilt during the 2003 workshop so I took the small bit I had designed and sewn together along with a big bag of scraps to the Nancy Crow workshop in Idaho last month. I completed this piece in between other work I did during that class. I feel #34 is a better piece than #33 but I have 2 more years of experience in between the major design phases so I hope that is a good thing!

These are both wonderful, but actually I prefer the earlier blue piece, because the blues themselves are so much clearer and deeper–and there seems to be more movement in it.
I can feel that mountain air in my lungs!

I really loved the blues in #33 too, but I also really like the hints of gold tones in #34. They are both cool, yet vibrant, pieces to me.

I think #33 speaks to me more because it feels more “open” like the western states are. I also like the muted browns more than the bright golds, but I think I’d say that about almost anything. :-)

Both are beautiful, though. Such lovely works.

At first glance I preferred #33 - perhaps just because I saw it first and it was brighter. But, after spending a few more minutes comparing them, I think Lisa probably liked #34 more because the piecing was more detailed, tighter and I guess more sophisticated. They are both great, but ‘art-wise’ I prefer #34.

I like what Danielle said about the “open” spaces of the west - I’m a big fan of the west for that reason both in Canada and the U.S.
