New Work - Structures #39

When I made the piece below (now touring the country with Quilt National 2005 - Collection A) I cut extra strips to make another quilt some time in the future.

The past week I’ve had a cold so I haven’t had much energy to work in my studio. I decided it was a good time to make the piece with the leftover strips as it involves a lot of sitting and sewing and not as much getting up and down as most other pieces.

This is what it looked like a few hours into the project. The 1″ (ish) wide strips of fabric were first cut into hundreds of 3″ lengths and then sewn together into smaller units. When I sew each unit (7 strips parallel and then 1 across the top) I strive to make each one beautiful by itself to keep interested in the many hours of sewing needed.

I pieced together about 160 of these units. Once finished I placed them onto my design wall in a layout that interested me:

After a full day of sewing today the quilt top is completed.

I added additional fabrics and colors to #39 beyond what I used in #31 so they aren’t exactly the same.

The image of #31 is a scan from a slide and so I can’t match the quality of the other images taken with my digital SLR camera. I suspect the color is slightly off on the slide but I don’t have the quilt at home so I can’t remember if it is really this gold. I kind of thought it was more yellowish. It’s amazing how bad my color memory actually is even though I spend every day working intimately with color.

I can’t help but comment how much frustration you relieve when you help poor planks like me, how to BEGIN! It can be so overwhelming to see such intricate and gorgeous patterns and wonder, how the he.. am I ever going to figure out how to get this thing going!

Thanks again Lisa for your generosity.
