Structures #48

I hate to admit my office is not organized as I had set as a goal for Sunday evening. It’s in that “it has to get worse to get better” state - as in I have dozens of piles of papers all over the floor. But the desk tops are clean so I’m almost there - hurray!

In the meantime I’ve been putting in a bit of work now and then on Structures #48, which has been on my design wall since July. You can see it in my studio pictures that I posted 6 months ago.

This is what it looked like back then:

And this is what it looks like today (I can piece between 8-10 blocks per hour so it’s slow going on this type of piece):

Okay - it didn’t really change color. The first photo was taken with sun glaring in the window and the second was taken at night with weird lighting things going on. The first photo is truer to the real colors. I’ll take my final photos outdoors so I can get the correct colors.

Structures #48 is very much like Structures #47. Only this piece is much darker. I think it has an interesting landscapey feel that I’m hoping to mostly wipe out by the time I finish putting the lines all over the top of it. I’m excited to see how it looks with all the dark lines as this is the first time I’ve tried putting dark lines over a light background in a piece like this.

And yes, I intend for many of the lines to disappear in the distance by using similar values for foreground and background. The upper right hand corner will have a much more pronounced grid over the top of it than the lower left, which I’m thinking will be pretty interesting, but I have to try it and see if I’m right. That’s what this series thing is all about for me.

Always wondering “what if”….

I’m wondering, how do you attach the dark lines on top of your background pieces? Do you fuse? And how do you piece your background pieces that don’t match up? I think your work is very visually interesting. I’m intrigued at how much complexity you can achieve with similar designs. Keep it up!

It is so interesting to see how your pieces start out…

    Thanks for the comments everyone.

I am decidedly a piecer. I tried wonder under but it just wasn’t for me. On the other hand I love piecing. I think it’s more challenging and hence more interesting to me.

I did some step by step posts of how I made structures #47 that hopefully answer Robins questions.

    They are here:

    Structures 47 - the beginning

    Structures 47 - making progress

    Structures 47 - more progress

Structures 47 - the final piecing
