Structures #66

I mentioned last week that I was thinking about quilting Structures #65 with all black thread. I made the small piece above to test out how I liked that look as a sample before starting the larger quilt.

Experiment was a success (although I’m having a bit of a hard time with the black on the bright orange - these are so not my colors but I’m trying to expand a bit more).

Right now I’m quilting Structures #67 but when it’s done I’ll go back to #68 and finish it.

I think the black thread is very dramatic and looks great on this piece. I love all of your work and really appreciate you sharing it here!

I agree with Vicki, and I LOVE these bold colors=:)

I like it! I think the black darkens the piece less than I would have anticipated. (Though I’d have to see before and after details to get a good feeling.) I think that’s what you were testing for, yes? Interesting! Can’t wait to see the results on the larger piece.

I really like the black thread across all of the colors in your “study”… I have quite a list of colors that are so-not-my-colors (like bright orange) to work with while in Oregon. I love spending time focused on expanding my color sense and palette!

Black of course makes a difference to what we see of your stitching on the monitor. I always find it interesting to see how one colour changes both itself and other colours as it crosses from one background to the next, and how one quilting colour can affect the relationship of the pieces’ colours with each other.

I know what you mean, color is so personal and subjective. The right hand quadrant including the orange, red and black happens to be my favorite part of this quilt. But, then again, orange is a fav of mine. As hard as I try to focus on the whole quilt, my eyes keep on diverting to the yellow square.

Lisa, what size is the sample here? I see it as a large piece in my mind’s eye.

There is a wonderful warm and earthy feel here that makes me want to lay down on it and sleep blissfully.

The black thread looks great! Of course, nearly every artwork I own has black outlining, for some reason.

Thanks Lisa. For a while I was using black quite a bit but the last few years it seems to have disappeared so I’m working on bringing it back for a while.
