Weekend Goals

Structures #48 - In Progress

I started this piece in July of 2005 when I added more design walls to my studio. I seem to always find something else to do besides finish this quilt, which is silly because I really love the way it’s turning out.

So my goal for the weekend is to get this quilt top finished. I still have a bit over half of the blocks to sew together and then it will take many many hours to piece it into a single entity. But I’m determined to get this finished.

Although this morning at 5:30am that determination wasn’t so obvious as I instead started the design work on Markings #15, which is coming along great I must say.

Focus - I need to focus!

My other goal for the weekend is to get the signup form for my Studio Newsletter onto my blog and website. I’m 50% finished with this project and I need to complete it. I’m now running about 3 weeks behind on my art business goals and I’d really like to get caught up at some point.

This is only the second weekend for the entire year that I will not have my kids at my house and I will actually be home. I just looked through my calendar as it felt like it had been a while. Ack - how did that happen? No wonder I feel so scattered all the time, I’ve had very little alone time in the past 3 months to relax and process my thoughts on my own.

Before I can get to work I have to remove the fiber art my daughter placed in front of my quilt:

Stuff on my cat

Okay I know - that is not art related and it’s a lame cat photo on an art blog, which can lead to all sort of loss of readership. Oh well, it’s friday, I love the blog stuffonmycat.com and I’ve been trying to figure out a way to link to this blog in a semi on-topic way for months.

Stuff + Cats = Awesome.

I love that you put the cat picture in. Do you use any of those fabrics that the cat is lounging in? I can really relate to your problem of focusing on one or two things. I am having this problem, also.

Glad you liked the cat picture Lisa. The fabric on the cat is from a large bin of commercial fabric scraps that I don’t use in my artwork. They are left over from traditional quilting projects from years ago. It’s actually one of the cats’ favorite places to sleep in my studio, otherwise I’d probably get rid of them.

As with all of your work, I love #48! I too am looking forward to a weekend ALONE! I don’t have kids or cats but DH is gone golfing. The cat photo is a riot and I also really like the stuffonmycat site. Your cat doesn’t look very happy - how long did the cat tolerate that situation?

Thanks Vicki. Actually she loved it. She stayed under there at least 1/2 an hour. I think a kid disturbed her and carried her off somewhere else. She’s amazingly tolerant - we put all sorts of things on her and she just sits there.

The other cat isn’t the sort to allow such indignations.

Deanna those are excellent. I knew about infinite cat but the others are new for me. I’m easily amused also and I even got my son a stuff on my cat tshirt for Christmas last year. I figure supporting small internet entrepreneurs is a good cause, plus it’s hard to find something a 14 year old boy will actually like.

    That’s a great gift!

I should have mentioned that my cat is an infinite cat:

The quilt is very interesting half done, real tension. And that looks like one mad cat.

Ditto on the goals this weekend!
I’m a painter not a quilter, and I have to put up a new show on Monday. It’s a newer, looser style (much more “me”) I’m working in with newer medium and, although I’m reaaly stoked about some of the results I’ve been getting, that whole fear thing is creeping in. What if, what if, what if they all look stupid, incomplete, weird, ridiculous? Had a fellow artist in last night though and gave me positive feedback, so that helps.
    Carry on and move forward!!!!!!!

    Lisa

I’ve looked at several of your photos of this particular piece–I’m reading my email backwards as I’ve just returned from a week long education trip.

I’m wondering–what would happen if you made some of your black pickupsticks in the blocks really thin and others really large and left some of the squares blank and only stitched a thin black line–maybe couched black thread instead of piecing.

Just wondering if that is going to be your next iteration in the series?

Love your quilts and have been following your progress for some time. Thanks for the link to Stuff on my Cat - it’s afforded me a nymber of moments of harmless fun - though my cats don’t always approve of what they see!
