I’d Rather Be In the Studio – Blog Book Tour

I'd Rather Be In the Studio

Blog Book Tour

Well known artist coach Alyson Stanfield of ArtBizBlog is embarking on a blog book tour to promote her new book I’d Rather Be in the Studio! The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion. I’m stop number 3 on the tour and my interview with Alyson is below. My very first podcast for my blog.

I asked Alyson about the importance of defining success for an artist and how that definition might change throughout an artist’s career. We also touched upon several other topics – like studio newsletters. Be sure to check out the other stops on the blog book tour as each artist has asked Alyson a different question.

You can listen to the interview by clicking here (it’s about 12-14 minutes long)

Or you can download the mp3 file to listen to later.

Studio Newlsetter

As I mentioned in this podcast and on my blog, I’m working on my very first studio newsletter. Alyson’s book was invaluable in helping me come to some decisions with what to do with my newsletter. Thank you Alyson!

My self imposed deadline of March 31st seems to have come and gone but I’m very close to having it finished. I anticipate sending it out within the next few hours so look for it in your inbox soon if you’ve signed up.

[Update - 6pm MST - I've come down with a bug. A short lived one I've decided. So the studio newsletter is delayed 1 more day as tomorrow I will feel wonderful and can complete the work. Everyone please send me healthy thoughts!]

  1. This is just too spooky! I did my very first podcast yesterday on my blog. Syncronicity or what? I’m going to give it a listen now (I’m in a cinema cafe so have to dig for my earphones…)

    Bravo!

  2. Nellie says:

Thank you. I appreciated getting to actually hear you both. I’ve played Allison’s published podcasts, but it great to hear the back and forth exchange between you.

I downloaded the podcast and I’m looking forward to listening to it tomorrow as I plow through some work that really needs to get done. I actually downloaded a whole series of podcasts from craftsanity two days ago, some of them are interviews with people 2 years ago that are even more successful now with their ventures, very fun to peek back. I’m intrigued by the shelf life of podcasts and their ability to capture a person at a point in time, all on a very raw and exposed level. How tired am I of over-produced press!

(As a side note, I had to right click on your link to download the file, I noticed on craftsanity that she outlines how to do this, as a complete idiot with podcasts I wouldn’t have known to do that if I wasn’t told, I’m using Firefox which may be the x factor.)

  4. Great job. Love the interaction. Great questions. I loved when Lisa commented about marketing and the concept of when she could quit. People often ask me when they can stop marketing their coaching practice and I always tell them that is an easy answer. When they want to stop coaching. Alyson is so right, Marketing doesn’t have a beginning, middle and end, it is on-going. I also totally agree with Alyson about building your list. Everyone needs to build a strong customer base. What I love about Alyson’s book is it applies to business, and not just the art business. I have gained so much from everything Alyson has shared in her book. And Alyson congratulations for making to number three on the Amazon Best Sellers list in the Art Biz section.

Thanks for hosting this Lisa. Really enjoyed it.

  5. Great Pod Cast. I too enjoy hearing your voices along with excellent information. Alyson you should be number one on the Amazon Best Sellers list. I’m positive you will be. Lisa, Alyson keep up the great work and Thanks.

That was wonderful on several fronts, to hear both of you speak, but also the questions and information.

  7. Hi Lisa -

I think there’s an amusing IRBITS litmus test developing with the blog tour: Which chapter do YOU open to first when you get Alyson’s book? For you, Lisa, it was the newsletter chapter. For me it’s going to be following-up with potential leads.

Thanks for doing this great interview. I really agree with how important it is to define success for yourself. There’s such pressure to define oneself by external measures, but staying passionately engaged in the *business* side of things is so much easier when *I* define the ideal destination.

    Thanks so much!

  8. great podcast! you are right! marketing is a never ending thing! but it’s fun when it’s all about you!!! I really enjoy your work!

  9. Jennifer: I was #1 on Amazon at one time. They do it by the hour! And I truly don’t follow along. Someone else told me he saw it at #1. So, can I say I’m a #1 bestseller? Thanks for your faith.

  10. This is exactly what I needed…I’ve taken a two year sabatical from marketing and am ready to take the leap once again and found the advice to define success for yourself extremely valuable. I loved it so much I have also added it to my blog. Thank you.

  11. Brenda says:

I just received your newsletter. It looks fabulous! I can only imagine how much tweaking of the newsletter code you made to customise it for your purposes. Well done.

  12. Lisa Call says:

Tina – how funny we both podcasted around the same time!

Thanks to Tina, Patty and Veronica for playing the ‘I want a free book’ link game!

    Thanks Nellie

Kathy – yes – I should have included the firefox instructions for the download – at one point I thought of it then forgot. Thanks for pointing it out.

  13. Lisa Call says:

Rachelle – I agree – Alyson’s advice goes far beyond just studio artists.

Thanks Jafabrit and Jennifer J and Claudine

Jennifer H – I love the litmus test! Where do you go first….

Yes Alyson – I think you can say you were a bestseller.

Veronica – thanks for the links

    Thank you Brenda!
