Investing in My Visual Art Career by Taking a Course on Writing

Words Words Words

I started blogging February 22, 2005. I had wanted to start earlier but had been thinking “I need to be able to show images of my art”. My first post was made a few days after I purchased my first digital camera – a Nikon D70.

I’ve learned a lot about my artwork and myself over the last seven years sharing my art journey on my blog.

I also learned not only did I have to show images of my art to blog, I needed to know how to write about my art.

Turns out I enjoy writing. Something I thought I might never say as I don’t have a strong history with words.

I scored in the low 500s in both the verbal SAT and GRE scores. These are not great scores, especially when compared to my high 700′s (a good score) on the math portions. I never enjoyed my english classes in high school and tried to avoid classes in college that required writing.

I’m an artist. Can’t my art could speak for itself?

I’m a software engineer. We barely speak to each other in our bubbles of introversion.

Words – who needs words!

Getting Better at Writing

Turns out I do. And it turns out I like them.

Now that I am teaching online workshops, I do a lot of communication via written word and it has become clear to me that I would benefit with some help in becoming a better writer.

Of course that was already clear every time I attempt to write my bio and artist statements. I get stuck.

Time to invest in myself and my career and learn more about writing. To that end I have enrolled in the Damn Fine Writing Course over at Men with Pens.

I’m looking forward to spending ten weeks improving the tools I need to be successful in my art career.

The writing course is a great idea. I bought a Great Courses series on writing and I’m sure it will improve my writing as well. I’ve started keeping a gratitude journal as well. Gretchen Rubin, author of the Happiness Project recommends it. It’s a positive way to start the day.

Jeanne,

I’m really enjoying the writing class. We are a week and a half into it and I’ve already had some great aha moments.

I look forward to hearing what you think about the Great Courses series.

I keep a gratitude journal also. I do mine at the end of the day and it is a perfect way to end the day.
