We Love Color

Last year I was invited by C&T Publishing and Robert Kaufman fabrics to create a new design using Kona Cotton solids to be included in a new book.

The book, We Love Color, published by Stash Books, was just released and it is packed full of bold, vibrant modern quilting designs.

Stepping Stones #1 – The Inspiration

I designed this textile painting a few weeks after returning from my week long yoga retreat in Costa Rica.

The images and colors of that trip were fresh in my head.

It’s pretty clear where the pattern came from – check out the floor of the yoga studio:

Fabulous fabulous stone work. It was mesmerizing.

When it came to the color, I wanted to capture the blues of the sky and ocean, the browns of the sand and the greens of the foliage.

When I look at this completed artwork, it always brings me back to that peaceful and perfect week in Costa Rica.

Kona Cotton and Robert Kaufman

When I began my journey into original pieced designs, I used Kona Cotton Solids and love the color palette of this line of fabrics. They have a unique look that is perfect for today’s modern quilting designs.

I’ve now created 2 large pieces that feature the same slate blue background as I’ve used in Stepping Stones #1 so I think it’s pretty clear this is one of favorites colors in this line.

I will photograph Chairs #1, which I finished 12 years ago, in the next few days as I think it will be fun to share it along size Stepping Stones #1.

I now hand dyed all of the fabrics I use in my artwork and so I have moved on from Kona Cottons and I will always remember it fondly as my first love in the world of solid fabrics. Although I didn’t move away from Kaufman fabrics as they are the best. All of my textile paintings today are created with Kaufman Pimatex.

Blog Tour

This blog post is part of a blog tour sponsored by Robert Kaufman. As part of the tour, you can win a copy of the book and a bundle of 28 new Kona colors.

28 new Kona Cotton Colors by Robert Kaufman

Including a fabulous new blueish/gray neutral called “iron”. At first I was confused as to why this was iron (I had to ask) but apparently this is the color of iron before it rusts. Well – duh…

Iron is a great color neutral color to add into your designs to help your brights pop even brighter.

To enter please share your answer to the question “where do you get your color inspiration?” in the comments below. Be sure to leave the proper contact info (your email address – it won’t appear in the comment). The winner will be randomly chosen on July 4th.

There is also a grand prize winner so be sure to read about that along with the list of contributing blogs over on the Robert Kaufman blog.

The Winner

Thank you to all that commented. My initial plan was to respond to all the comments but it soon became clear that wasn’t going to happen. From beginners to more experienced artists, you all have some wonderful inspiration for color.

I’ve announced the winner here: Sharing a First and a Winner

Most often I find inspiration from other quilts (on the internet, in magazines, or in books).

I find colour inspiration everywhere, but particularly from images on the web. I subscribe to a number of colour blogs and design blogs which are particularly rich in inspiration

I get most of my color inspiration from fabric lines, quilting blogs, and design seeds. Great giveaway for one lucky person!!

I get my colour inspiration from looking very closely at natural objects. Nothing in nature is ever a single colour, so it’s possible to pull an entire palette from something simple–a stone, a blue bell, a poppy.

Probably mostly from nature. Spent years painting in watercolor and find that experience plays in my head. Before that years sewing–gament construction. I think all that trained a color sense that carries.

I am aware of always of complements, analogous combos, etc.

I was in a new convention center Friday and commented that the carpet would make a great quilt. Love your comments about inspiration. Thanks.

Often it is a color or object. Some smells also are inspiring.

Beth July 1, 2012 at 9:08 pm

Usually it starts with one piece of fabric and listening to what it wants to be. Antique quilts are also a favorite.
Love the yoga studio floor

I allways take a look on my stash and on my scraps to start with. That is where my inspiration comes. And then buy what I miss.

I get my color inspiration from nature and from the idea of what I want to do (i.e. baby quilt for a friend who’s baby room is painted avocado, quilt for a friend who likes lavendar). Thanks for the chance to win!

I love bright colors and have started putting them with a white background, but now I am drawn to grey and would like to try this colour with brights and soft colors to see the effects.

I am inspired by the things I see in nature, there are so many colors in the woods. I love Robert Kaufman’s colors they have opened a whole new world for me. I can’t wait to read the book and see those 28 new colors.

I’m inspired by combinations I see, architecture is a favourite – all the lovely sunwashed colors of Provence for example, and by fashion – the great color matchings by Kenzo are a particular favorite.

liz hietkamp July 3, 2012 at 10:46 am

my colour inspiration – fabrics, the person i am making a quilt for, conversation and discussion with my husband over pieces i am working on…i am generally drawn to jewel tones.

Catherine Sylvester July 3, 2012 at 11:14 am

I am inspired by bright shiny things and places. I love sun bright oranges and reds.

Allison C July 3, 2012 at 4:14 pm

I get my inspiration from my environment. I work in the city (Boston) so I see a lot of grays, white, and blues. And those happen to be the tones I really like so it sort of works out well. I love getting inspiration for new block patterns, etc from the architecture surrounding me as well.

Is it too dorky to say I get my inspiration from other quilters? Sometimes they are so much better at putting colors together than me.

Celine July 4, 2012 at 5:55 am

I love looking at pictures on Flicker to find new inspirations for colour combination. Thanks for the chance to win
