Installation images from my show, Markings: Repetition and Pattern. The last day the show is open to the public is this Wednesday, March 19, from 9-4pm. The lighting makes for difficult photography in the gallery - apologies for the unevenness.

Lemon Sponge Cake Ballet

Lemon Sponge Cake

I think I mentioned that the reason my show is only open to the public on wednesdays (from 9am-4pm) is that the gallery is in the lobby of the Macky Auditorium. It makes for a large captive audience for my artwork, which is very nice.

One of the performances at the auditorium during my show will be Choreographic Fusion on March 22 at 7:30pm.

According to the Boulder Philharmonic website:

Music and movement come together in fascinating ways in Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet’s interpretations of modern masterpieces by Arto Pärt. Then the full Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra takes the stage for Rachmoninoff’s orchestral tour-de-force, the Symphonic Dances.

I will be there with my kids in tow (currently unbeknownst to them as they return home from their 3 month trip to Europe with their dad tomorrow night - we’ll see if they picked up any culture).

If you attend the performance let me know as I’d love to say hello. You can buy tickets here and kid/student tickets are only $5.

Markings #22

Yet another of my favorites in this series as I love working with yellow and gray. My piece, Structures #31, in Quilt National 2005 was also yellow and gray. I liked the 9 square configuration of Markings #12 so I decided to revisit it in this piece, which is quite a bit larger. Markings #22 has more organic lines and it doesn’t have as much asymmetry as #12 but there is some.

I finished this piece at 9am on the day I had to deliver the work to the gallery, a full 3 hours ahead of the delivery time.

And no, it’s not really an accident I decided to write about the ballet along with this piece, kind of fitting.

An Ode to Purple and Rothko

The Pulse

Seth Apter, of blog The Altered Page, has posted compilations of artists’ responses to a few of his questions. It was fun to read the answers. I asked to join in after he got going and my answers are posted in the postscript.

Purple and Rothko

Two of my answers (you can read the others on his blog):

If I could take a class from one artist from anytime in history, including today, it would be…Mark Rothko - I love his work and would love to chat with him about his take on abstract expressionism.

Today my favorite color is…Purple - always purple - deep royal purple but any of them will do. Although I don’t use it often in my artwork as I’m drawn more to earthy southwestern colors in my art. Subtle purples creep into these pieces. Maybe I’ll go home tonight and make something purple.

In response to my answers Seth sent me an email with this image (one of Rothko’s amazing paintings):

Structures #96

A few days later I made Structures #96. It will also be part of my solo show at the Lux Art Center, Fencing In or Keeping Out. Hard to miss the influence.

I also had the Structures #35 in mind, the piece recently installed at the medical facility in Cleveland. I didn’t take the idea in that piece very far and now I’m excited about seeing where it leads me.

100

Only 4 more pieces in this series and I’ll hit 100 - woohoo! I might have to plan an event of some sort.

Although I’m switching gears back to my Markings series tonight to finish up a few things for my solo show opening at Macky Auditorium Gallery in Boulder, Colorado in 2 weeks. I won’t get back to Structures pieces until late this month.

Markings Show

The Macky show is titled Markings: Repetition and Pattern. Mark your calendars now for February 23 from 2-4 for the opening if you want to see the show in person. I’m also giving an artist talk at 3pm. I’ll be posting images of all the work in the show on my blog after the show opens.

The gallery isn’t open to the public very often, just Wednesdays from 9-4, as it’s in the lobby of a theater, so I asked for an opening time on the weekend for all us working types. Thousands of people will see the show during performances so it’s an excellent venue, just not very accessible to friends.

Complaining

Quote by Maya Angelou:

If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. Don’t complain.

Excellent article by Christine Kane related to gossiping. There is also a second part.

Not complaining/gossiping for 21 days is a very difficult challenge. Step 1 - I become more and more aware of my words each day.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday - no matter what holiday that might have been. I spent yesterday in my studio designing 3 new pieces for my solo show in February. I determined I’d like to make 9 new pieces for this show between now and Feb 20th.

My solo show will be at the Andrew J. Macky Gallery in Boulder opens February 20th. This is the same place where I had my first solo show 2 years ago and the space is gorgeous. I’ll be exhibiting 12-16 new pieces in my Markings series in 2008.

I removed my last post (about what I want to call my artwork). I don’t feel I’m communicating my thoughts very clearly so instead of trying to explain myself I decided to just remove the post and when my thoughts are clearer I will try again.
